The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) represents over 2,000 optometrists across Ontario. For more than 100 years, we’ve supported members and advanced the profession to ensure high-quality eye care for all Ontarians.

OUR HISTORY
For over a century, we've championed the profession of optometry, advanced access to quality eye care, and built a strong foundation that continues to shape eye health across Ontario.
The Optometrical Association of Ontario is founded.
The Ontario Optometry Act is passed, establishing the Board of Examiners in Optometry.
A four year Doctor of Optometry program is introduced with the first graduating class in 1956.
Optometry is officially recognized as a regulated health profession which shaped the Regulated Health Professionals Act (RHPA) in the 90's.
Optometrists gain authority to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPAs) for a wide range of eye conditions. This is a fundamental scope milestone.
A new four-year funding agreement with the provincial government is reached.
OAO’s new strategic plan, Focus Forward 2026-2028, is launched, setting a renewed course for advocacy, professional support, and public awareness.
