Ontario Association of Optometrists Welcomes New Board of Directors and Incoming Executive Leadership

Toronto, ON — The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO), the leading professional organization representing optometrists in Ontario, is pleased to welcome the recently appointed members of the board following the OAO’s 2025 Annual Meeting, held in Toronto on March 30, 2025.

We’re pleased to welcome the recently appointed members of the board:

  • Dr. Kristin Heeney
  • Dr. Katie Ryan
  • Dr. Kulvir Singh
  • Dr. Shaina Nensi

These highly respected optometrists bring diverse clinical experience, leadership skills, and a shared passion for advancing the profession of optometry in Ontario. Their election reflects OAO’s commitment to strong governance and a strategic vision for the future of eye health care.

In addition, the Ontario Association of Optometrists Board convened to elect its incoming Executive Officers for the 2025–2026 term. These appointments were formally ratified at the Board’s meeting on May 1, 2025:

  • President: Dr. Shaina Nensi
  • Vice President: Dr. Virginia Donati
  • Treasurer: Dr. Pasquale Vecchio

“It’s an honour to continue serving on the Board and to take on a second term as President,” said Dr. Shaina Nensi. “The past year has been both inspiring and energizing, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I look forward to building on this momentum as we continue advocating for our profession, supporting our members, and advancing the role of optometrists in Ontario’s healthcare system.”

The OAO also wishes to recognize and sincerely thank outgoing Board Directors — Dr. Josephine Pepe, Dr. Tracy Vo, and Dr. Greg Wilson — for their invaluable contributions to optometry in Ontario during their terms of service. Their leadership has played a critical role in strengthening the Association’s governance, advocacy, and member support initiatives.

The Ontario Association of Optometrists remains focused on advancing its strategic priorities as outlined in the InSight 2023–2025 plan, including:

  • Advocating for sustainable OHIP remuneration and expanded optometrist scope of practice
  • Strengthening member engagement and communication
  • Increasing public awareness of the essential role of optometrists in overall health
  • Providing leading continuing education and practice management resources

With the new Board Members and incoming Executive team, the Ontario Association of Optometrists is poised to lead the profession into a stronger future, ensuring that the
voice of Ontario’s optometrists remains strong, united, and impactful across the healthcare system.
