Surge in Viral Eye Infections: Insights from Optometrists

The rise in viral eye infections has prompted concern among Optometrists. The President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO), Dr. Josephine Pepe, emphasizes the critical role of Optometrists in diagnosing and treating red eyes. Dr. Josephine Pepe has stated, “Optometrists are the best professionals to visit for proper diagnosis and treatment of red eyes because they have the training and specialized equipment often not found in walk-in clinics, or pharmacies.”

In a recent interview for a Global News story, OAO member Dr. Ken Mandadakis remarked on the surge in cases, mentioning that he hadn’t encountered such a high volume previously. Dr. Mandadakis also noted that the symptoms seemed more severe compared to what he had seen before.

It is important to remember to see an Optometrist first. Optometrists are equipped to discern eye issues accurately and provide appropriate care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.
