Background

This strategic plan was developed during a historic time for the Ontario Association of Optometrists including:
  • A once-in-a-century global pandemic, that has continuing implications for how people live and work
  • 2021 job action with respect to OHIP remuneration rates for optometric work in which the board achieved unprecedented mobilization of association members and members of the public
  • The OAO membership voting 98% “FOR” of a deal with the Ontario government that included an OHIP fee increase, funds for optometrists to modernize their practices and adjustments to fee codes to align with scientific, evidence based eye care. This represented the first significant deal in over 3 decades
  • The highest membership in the history of the organization

Consultative Process

This strategic plan was created ‘by members, for members’ as well as with the best interest of the future of the optometry profession in Ontario in mind. The consultative process included:
  • A survey consultation of the membership (in which 40% of the membership participated)
  • A highly interactive stakeholder engagement workshop held on January 14th of nearly 60 participants
  • A workshop of board and senior staff on January 15th, 2023 to consider and develop a draft strategic plan based on all of this stakeholder input, and
  • A second workshop of board and senior staff on February 12 to review and fine tune the OAO’s next strategic plan
