Alberta Advances Optometry Scope of Practice: A Significant Step Forward for the Profession

The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) congratulates the Alberta Association of Optometrists, the Alberta College of Optometrists and the Government of Alberta on an important milestone in advancing the scope of optometric practice.

The Alberta government's announcement regarding the expansion of optometrists' scope of practice represents meaningful progress toward modernizing eye care and improving patient access to timely, community-based services. The proposed expansion includes select laser procedures and minor surgical procedures.

These developments represent an important step forward for optometry in Canada and closely align with recommendations the OAO previously submitted to the Ontario government as part of our own scope modernization proposal.

Our submission included expanded authority for select ocular laser therapies, minor eyelid procedures and other clinical services that would allow Ontario optometrists to practice more fully within their education and training. These changes were not included in the Ontario Ministry of Health's July 2026 announcement.

Here in Ontario, the OAO remains committed to advancing these same priorities. We look forward to continued collaboration with the Ontario government and our partners as we work toward a modernized scope of practice that better serves patients, strengthens our profession and supports a more efficient health care system.

We will continue to keep members informed as this work progresses.
